Goals, rewards & ideas

Something to work toward.

Most of a dynamic is keeping something up. A goal is about getting somewhere, a reward is how you say thank you when you do, and an idea is where the next thing starts — with a yes from both of you.

Something to work toward

Tasks and protocols are about keeping something up. A goal is about getting somewhere — a book to finish together, a sum to save, a streak to reach — and it is the one figure in the app that looks forward rather than back.

There are two shapes of it, because two different things want tracking. A goal for the two of you is set by whoever runs the dynamic and can be tied to a figure that already exists — a protocol streak, a check-in streak — so it updates itself with nothing typed in. A personal one is entirely yours: whatever number matters to you, moved by hand, and it follows you between relationships rather than belonging to one of them.

A reward is written down at the start, not revealed at the end — you can see, on an ordinary Tuesday with the bar a third full, what the far end of it is worth.

A goal resolves itself. Reach the target and it is marked reached; miss the deadline and it is marked missed — nobody has to notice, and nobody has to rule on it. There is no consequence attached to missing one, because that has never been what this is for.

Reaching one, or getting a task approved, is also a moment somebody can say thank you for — with a reward. It is handed down from its own button on Home, tied to the thing that earned it, and saying thanks is enough: it does not wait on anybody’s approval. On your own, you can reward yourself. A reward is a record of its own, kept apart from the tasks, so it never turns up on the Tasks screen looking like something else to do.

A settled goal keeps its place for a week, saying what happened, and then folds quietly into a record that stays. Nothing here is ever dismissed, because nothing here was ever asking to be.

Ideas, and the yes that has to come first

Not everything starts as a decision. An idea can be put up by either of you and answered — interested, maybe, no — and only then turned into something real: a task, a rule, a protocol, a standing permission, or a scene on the calendar.

The category you file it under says what it will BECOME, which used to make the picker a question about a destination rather than about the idea. So there is a sixth option that goes nowhere at all — a want, a curiosity, a thing to talk about — because the honest answer is often none of the five, and filing those under whichever was least wrong is how somebody ends up being offered a button that turns a passing thought into a rule.

Nothing here happens because it was suggested. It happens because it was agreed.
